Modernizing Schools: Technology and Buildings for a New Century - Tuesday, September 19, 2000
Time: 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM ET
The new Millennium has just begun, but innovative communities are already creating schools for the future. Around the country, new and renovated schools are meeting the challenges of the ever-growing student population and worn-out structures with new facilities that support the teaching and learning styles of the 21st century.
These schools are energy-smart, environmentally sensitive and technologically up to date. Their design features support and enhance academic excellence. And they are being created by the community with students and the community in mind.
On the September Satellite Town Meeting, the first of the 2000-2001 season, U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley and his guests will discuss how well-designed schools and thoughtfully planned educational technology can be powerful tools to complement and enhance teaching and learning for all. Among the questions to be addressed are:
- What should the school of the 21st century look like? How should the physical structure support new ways of teaching and learning?
- How can technology help raise achievement for all children?
- How can new or renovated facilities meet the needs of the explosively growing school population, while providing students with the smaller learning environments they need?
- In what ways has technology revolutionized teaching and learning? How can buildings reflect that change?
- How can school buildings be re-imagined to become centers of their communities?
- How can thoughtfully designed facilities and resources, including technology, help connect students to the community and the real world?
- And, how can communities find the resources necessary to undertake these costly investments?
