Partners for Excellence: Families, Businesses and Communities Working Together for Schools - Tuesday, November 21, 2000
Time: 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM ET
Now, more than ever before, the American public is focused on education, and to achieve excellence schools need meaningful support from families, businesses and communities. Across the country, creative partnerships are bringing new resources, ideas, and volunteers to help local schools to succeed. Not only are businesses allowing more time for parents to participate in schools, they are establishing their own on-site schools in partnership with school districts. Not only are communities supporting the athletic teams, they are expanding the borders of learning by providing hands-on learning experiences in parks, offices, and museums. And, not only are parents reading report cards, they are providing expertise and time to help govern schools and set standards.
The November 2000 Town Meeting will focus on significant partnerships that work among schools, businesses and communities. As U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley has often said, “Education is everybody’s business.”
The Secretary and his panel of guests will discuss questions such as…
- What roles can community organizations and businesses play within education?
- In what ways can schools foster partnerships that connect them to resources, ideas and best practices?
- How can community organizations and businesses partner with schools to support quality teaching and learning?
- In what ways can parents get involved in their child’s school? How can parents provide additional opportunities for learning?
- Why is community involvement critical? How do community-school partnerships benefit students – benefit the community?
- How can community organizations support parent and employment involvement in school?
- In what ways can businesses ensure schools are equip with the latest technologies that prepare students for the new century?
