Education Technology: Preparing Students and Parents for the Digital Age - Tuesday, June 17, 2003
Time: 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM ET
"Technology provides new ways of … enhancing educational opportunities for students. When used effectively, technology can help prepare our nation´s children succeed in the 21st century."
U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige
Technology has tremendous potential to inspire students, improve academic performance, and close the achievement gap for children who historically have been left behind. That is why—along with reading, writing, mathematics and science—technology has become our schools’ "new basic." Technology is also an ever-increasing presence in children’s lives outside of the classroom—in the form of the Internet, video and computer games, e-mail, cellular phones, music-sharing technologies and much more. This immersion in technology shapes student assumptions and expectations about education and has significant implications for the way that children learn and schools teach.
Technology has also become a powerful tool to help parents stay involved in their child’s education. School Web sites, message boards and the like now provide mothers and fathers with access to everything from assignments and lunch menus to specific information on their children’s academic performance and offer an almost infinite number of learning resources. But technology presents parents with serious challenges, too, as they seek to protect their children from online dangers and offensive content.
Our quality of life and the economic health of the nation depend on how well we prepare students for the digital age. Schools, parents, and communities all have a vital role to play in meeting this challenge.
The June edition of Education News Parents Can Use will explore questions such as:
- How can advanced technology be integrated into the curriculum to help students prepare for the digital age?
- How can technology be a tool to help close the achievement gap between disadvantaged students and their peers?
- How can parents stay involved in their child’s education through the use of technology?
- How does technology shape student perceptions about school, home and the world? How does this impact their learning?
- What resources are available to help kids use computers and the Internet safely and responsibly?
