Preventing Drug and Alcohol Abuse: Keeping Kids on the Right Track - Tuesday, February 15, 2005
Time: 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM ET
Whether a child is 8 or 18, parents want to ensure he or she is healthy, safe and successful in school. Yet, as children get older they face tough choices that can affect their lives. One of the greatest challenges involves drug and alcohol abuse. We know that underage drinking and drug abuse can impair a student’s ability to make good decisions, affect school attendance and academic performance, and lead to health risks, as well. Research tells us that drug and alcohol abuse are among the leading killers of those under age 21.
Because schools have a mission to ensure all children have the opportunity to succeed, the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 encourages school districts to adopt comprehensive drug- and alcohol-abuse prevention programs to keep students on the right track. These programs set clear expectations and penalties; identify students who are at risk of delinquent behavior; weave researched-based prevention curriculum into the school day; enlist student-leaders to be advocates for student safety on and off campus; and, involve parents in an intervention program when a student is caught using drugs, alcohol and even tobacco.
The February broadcast of Education News will explore how parents, schools and the community are working together to provide students with the knowledge and tools necessary to make wise, informed choices about drug and alcohol abuse. The program will:
- Share what the U.S. Department of Education and the No Child Left Behind Act offers schools and
districts on drug and alcohol abuse prevention.
- Explain what research tells us about the effect of drug and alcohol abuse on an adolescent’s physical and mental development.
- Provide tips on how to talk to children about drug and alcohol abuse.
- Explain what effective prevention programs look like.
- Suggest ways that parents, schools and the community work together.
- Share resources for parents and schools on prevention and intervention.
